Calgary Flooding

This flood event caused significant damage to many homes in Calgary and High River, to the south of Calgary. As a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA), Micheka Kostyniuk flew to Alberta to assist insurers with emergency property assessments for several weeks.  Rene Caskanette was also an APEGA member and assisted and provided support on these claims both from Ontario and a trip to Calgary.

The majority of our assessments involved examining commercial and residential structures in the worst affected areas to determine if there was any structural damage as a result of the floods.  In some cases, we were asked to help determine the cause of damage; was the loss purely sewer backup, purely overland flooding, or a combination of the two.  If it was a combination, we were asked where possible to help determine which event began first. We did air quality sampling and mould sampling in lesser damaged commercial buildings to determine if they were safe for re-occupancy or whether abatement was required prior to occupancy. 

Following our involvement with the floods, APEGA reached out to our office to interview us for their magazine publication, which included a segment on the help received for Albertans from across the country.

While our offices are all located in Ontario, we are happy to travel wherever you need our support and assistance. It is a simple process for us to cross-register between provinces as members in good standing of the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
